U.S. Sanctions On Iran & Russia: Operation Economic Outcast

Roughly a year ago, our Firm participated in BWG Global teleconferences (https://bwgglobal.com/) on cross-border payments on June 23 and July 18, 2025. See www.wstelecomlaw.com/2025/07/u-s-sanctions-on-russia-anticipating-the-winds-of-war. Recently, we revisited that discussion at BWG’s most recent cross-border payments teleconference, updating participants on U.S. sanctions policy and the latest initiative: Operation Economic Outcast. Our discussion shows how Western sanctions, indirectly – and perhaps unintentionally – can present a problem for U.S. companies engaged in seemingly ordinary cross-border transactions. The problem is the opacity of the foreign banking and payment chain.

A summary of our discussion may be found at Economic-Outcast-Sanctions-Update-10-5-2026.pdf. For additional details about sanctions and their implications for cross-border financial transfers, please see our “Negotiable Hostilities” alerts/webinars (sponsored by Thomson Reuters West LegalEd Center) at https://wstelecomlaw.com/2023/08/negotiable-hostilities-webinars/. The next version of this webinar series will be coming soon.
